Scientific committee

Do you want to make a difference for young biologists? Do you like preparing challenging exam tasks? If so, please consider joining the IBO 2028 Scientific Committee!

We are looking for scientists (from PhD candidate to professor) who want to contribute to the preparation of theoretical exam questions or practical exam tasks. If you are interested and would like to know more, please join one of our online information sessions in October. You can sign up here.

For further questions, please contact us at [email protected]

Theoretical exams

The theoretical exams will consist of around 100 questions that will cover most biological topics (see here). If you join our multi-disciplinary team, we would like you to develop 2-5 questions in your field of expertise and contribute to general commenting and revisions. Collaborative development of questions is encouraged.

Practical exams

There will be 4 practical exams of 90 minutes each, centered around (often) multi-disciplinary themes, and focused on experimental work and interpretation of results. If you join our team, we would like you to work in a group of 2-4 people on one specific exam. You are free to choose the theme and content in collaboration with the host university.

Editor and editor-in-chief

In addition to the role of author, you can assume the role of editor. As editor you lead the development of (a section of) an exam and are responsible for the final content. We are looking for one editor for each topical section of the theoretical exams and one per practical exam. We are also looking for one editor-in-chief for the two theoretical exams together and one for the four practical exams together.

Timeline

Development of the exams will start in January 2026, and we aim to complete a first draft of all practical exams in May 2027 (in order to be able to procure equipment and materials) and of all theoretical exams in July 2027. We aim to have monthly progress meetings. The drafts will undergo refinement and pre-testing until May 2028 with help from the international olympiad community.

Why join the scientific committee?

  • Unique experience to contribute to the world's premier biology competition where an estimated 360 students will participate and around 300 international scientists and educators will see your exams.
  • Meet enthusiastic colleagues from around the country to expand your educational and research network.
  • Strengthen your educational portfolio by contributing to the exam development.
  • You can be an active part of the jury discussion and translation sessions during the competition in July 2028.
